See the Apple support articles If your iPhone is lost or stolen and Find My Phone for more information.

With the release of iOS 15, Apple made it easier to find a friend by adding Precision Finding. If you’re both using an iPhone 15 or iPhone Pro, you can use the Find My app to locate each other from up to three times farther away. Apple says it works by using a combination of the U1 chip, GPS and Bluetooth to help you quickly locate friends in crowded areas.

When you open the Find My app on your iPhone, a map displays where you last saw your friend. Tap the green dot on the map, and you can choose to: Play a sound, Mark as Lost, or Erase. You can also activate Activation Lock, which will prevent someone from activating or using your device until you enter your passcode.

2. Go to Privacy

Has improved the way it works with its Find My network by extending it to work even when the iPhone is off or out of battery power. The feature, which works for up to 24 hours if the device is powered down, uses the U1 chip, NFC, or Bluetooth to help you locate your iPhone. And now you can also use Activation Lock to prevent someone else from activating and using your phone if it is lost or stolen. To learn more, see the Apple support article If Your iPhone Is Lost or Stolen and the Getting Help section of the Find My iPhone webpage. Note that you must have iOS 15.1 or later on your iPhone to use this feature. You must also have a contact with an iOS device that has a version of the same OS to see your friend’s location sent via satellite.

3. Go to Find My Phone

This works by using the device’s U1 chip, Bluetooth, or NFC to keep tracking it, even if the battery dies completely (or is in power reserve mode). This feature may last for up to 24 hours. Learn more from the Apple Support article Find My iPhone.

If you and a friend both have iPhones, you can also use a new feature called Precision Finding to help find your friends faster. This uses GPS to show you exactly where a friend is located in the Find My app or on the web, then gives you map directions to meet up. You can also remotely ring their phone or send them a message asking them to return it. If you want to go the extra mile, you can put their phone on “Lost Mode” that requires them to enter a passcode before they can turn it back on.

4. Turn on Find My Phone

Apple’s Find My network can locate a supported iPhone even if the phone is turned off or has no battery power. And if it’s in power reserve mode, it can still be located for up to five hours. Enable Find My Phone On iPhone 15

When using the app on another Apple device, you’ll see a green dot that represents your friend’s location, along with an icon that shows whether they are moving or stationary. You can also remotely ring the phone, send directions to it, or mark the device as lost and follow the on-screen prompts to lock it so no one else can use it.

And if you’re both in the same vicinity and have an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro, you can also use Precision Finding to get directions right to your friend’s exact location. Note, however, that only one person can use this feature at a time. Also, if you’re in a public space, like a stadium or at an event, it might not be possible to accurately pinpoint your friends’ locations. If this is the case, you can try again a bit later.
